Hound hunters treed the cat on Tuesday March 3, and Wisconsin DNR endangered
resources, wildlife and law enforcement staff worked with hound hunters to
again tree the cat on Wednesday and Thursday 3/4 & 3/5 in an effort to
immobilize it for radio collaring and collecting samples for DNA analysis. We
were unsuccessful in the immobilization effort but were able to officially
verify the cougar and determine that it was a male. Several hairs, a small
amount of blood (in snow) and urine samples were obtained by tracking the
animal. If you have questions please fell free to contact myself (Ken Jonas)
or John Olson, Furbearer ecologist at the phone numbers on the news release.
A picture of the treed cougar is below.
